TSB funded project in 3D preforms

Published

The key innovation of this project is to derive and reuse mechanical performance knowledge and use novel information and communication technology developments of software and algorithms to enable process change to predict the behaviour and mechanical properties of structural, woven 3D Carbon Fibre Reinforcement Pre-forms when moulded into Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites (CFRCs). This novel development is driven by the requirement to have seamless integration of data transfer and product development from the designer's desk and 3D solid-modelling Computer Aided Design computer to the production of a structural 3D solid CFRC prototype which meets that designers' performance and service criteria. The project is applicable to the High Value Manufacturing sector, where there are requirements to develop 3D structural CFRCs and the Construction sector where there is an opportunity to replace steel reinforcement for concrete with woven fibre pre-forms.
